Back in October, we reported that Robert Downey Jr. was potentially leaving Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming sci-fi film. Now, it would appear the Iron Man star has definitely left the production.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Downey Jr. has officially stepped away from Gravity to produce and potentially star in How to Talk to Girls. That film, which would also be produced by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum), is based on a book of the same name from nine-year-old author Alec Greven.
As of now, Downey’s potential involvement with How to Talk to Girls has not changed his commitment to Oz: The Great and Powerful. The actor is still reportedly attached to star in Sam Raimi’s take on the classic Wizard of Oz tale (which is rumored to be quite racy).
With Downey Jr.’s official exit, Alfonso Cuarón must figure out which actor he can cast opposite Academy Award-winner Sandra Bullock. As we’ve discussed before, the film revolves almost completely around Bullock’s character, so finding someone to fill in the RDJ role shouldn’t be such a difficult task. Nevertheless, that duo represented a pretty powerful Hollywood pair, so it’s a bit of a shame to see that they won’t star in the film together.
Gravity has been plagued by casting switches for months now. In the last year, several major actresses were rumored for Bullock’s part, including Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively, Angelina Jolie, and Natalie Portman. It’s too bad, too, because the movie sounds like it could be quite interesting. It still could be, of course, but one has to wonder if all of this behind-the-scenes drama will affect the quality of the film.
