Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes in ‘Sherlock Holmes 2′ Set Photos

Stephen Fry, Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock Holmes 2, Robert Downey Jr. Guy Ritchie

Earlier in the month, Stephen Fry took some time to talk about playing Mycroft Holmes, the older brother of famed detective Sherlock Holmes, in Sherlock Holmes 2.

Now, we’ve got photos of the actor in costume to back up his statements.

Fry, beloved for his work in a wide range of television shows, films, and plays, had previously expressed his excitement for the role and his admiration for director Guy Ritchie’s unique camera style.

I for one would be happy hearing Stephen Fry say just about anything. The man is simply awesome in everything he’s in, from his great comedy bits with Hugh Laurie to his random guest spots on shows like Bones. Imagine my delight then when I saw the new pictures of Fry as Mycroft Holmes on the set of Sherlock Holmes 2.

Check below for two of the five images of Fry looking dapper in his Victorian garb. These images come our way via JoBlo and the message boards at StephenFry.com. Click the second image for a slightly larger version.

Stephen Fry playing Sherlock Holmes brother Mycroft Holmes

The character of Mycroft Holmes is fascinating, because he is actually smarter and more capable at solving crimes than Sherlock Holmes. The only thing keeping him from being the world’s greatest detective is his sheer laziness. In Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, Mycroft is recognized as a genius and critical figure to the British government, but also someone who would rather theorize than investigate.

How the character of Mycroft will fit into the fast-paced world of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes remains to be seen, but rest assured casting Stephen Fry in the role was an excellent step in the right direction. At the very least, the banter between Fry and Robert Downey Jr. will be firing on all cylinders.

Sherlock Holmes 2 hits theaters on December 16th, 2011.
