New Spider-Man Image Shows Mask & Web Shooters

Andrew Garfield - Spider-Man costume mask and Web-Shooters

Just over a week ago the very first image of The Social Network star Andrew Garfield in costume as Spider-Man hit the web (pun intended) and since then, details and set photos have been surfacing almost daily.

In what ways will director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) differentiate this movie from the (very) recent Spider-Man films? We know Daily Bugle’s infamous J. Jonah Jameson and Peter Parker love interest Mary Jane won’t be around this go. Outside of the character selections, the biggest change for the film, at least visually, will be in the new Spider-Man costume which we have only see so far from the official mask-less Garfield pic and some distant set photos.

MTV shared the latest photo, released from the set of the Sony Pictures Spider-Man reboot, which reveals the best full look yet of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man in action. This is also our first legitimate close look at Spidey’s new mask and the confirmed mechanical web-shooters, built into his costume.

Close-up of new Spider-Man costume

The new Spider-Man outfit designed for Garfield’s lankier build is noticeably a lot brighter in color, looking and feeling more like a comic book or cartoon (or an Olympic swimmer). A part of the reason for the significant design change over Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy design is to differentiate it from the familiar Tobey Maguire look and more importantly, to compensate for the downside of shooting in 3D, the darkening caused by shooting it in RED EPIC 3D.

So, what you see here is not quite how it’ll look in the final product. Obviously. From the images thus far, I still do prefer Maguire’s sleek and modern costume over this design but I’ll give Garfield a chance to show me it in action.

As for the mechanical web-shooters, you can see what they look like built into the costume here. But what catches my attention is the same metallic look on his feet.

With a solid idea of what the new iteration of the Spider-Man franchise title hero will look like, we wait anxiously for a look at The Lizard (Rhys Ifans).

Movie Image Roundup: ‘Green Lantern’, ‘Three Musketeers’, ‘Cars 2′ and More [Updated]

Screen Rant's Movie Image Roundup

[UPDATE: Check out some new hi-res Pirates of the Caribbean 4 images!]

There are over 150 movies releasing in theaters this year and you can get a detailed look at each month’s releases in our Massive 2011 Movie Preview. As the year progresses, we can expect PR departments from various studios to begin ramping up the marketing pushes on all of these films.

One way they build excitement for a film is by releasing still images, which usually consist of behind-the-scenes material, freeze frames from the movie (out of context of course) or occasionally a “cell phone reporter” will snap a picture or two while a film is shooting. Sometimes a studio will just take a Hi-Res still from the latest trailer and call it “new.”

Today we have 26 different images from 11 different films of various styles – some good, some bad, but all interesting. Let’s kick things off with a trio of Green Lantern images.

-

WB has been catching a lot of heat for their decision to use an entirely CG Green Lantern suit. What’s odd is that these pictures of Tomar-Re and Sinestro (Mark Strong) in full CG Green Lantern Corp outfits look amazing. Hopefully they will be able to match that quality with Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern outfit when the film releases. The makeup used to increase the size of Peter Sarsgaard’s head to the proportions of evil genius Hector Hammond is quite impressive, though.

Johnny Depp hits the high seas again this summer in Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and this time his characters, Captain Jack Sparrow, is on the hunt for the legendary fountain of youth. But of course, things can’t ever go easy for Captain Jack: this time around he has the most feared pirate of the all on his tail: Blackbeard (Ian McShane). If that weren’t enough, Jack has unfinished drama with Blackbeard’s spunky daughter, Angelica (Penelope Cruz), as well as his traitorous first mate, Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). In these new hi-res images we see Blackbeard’s wrath, and Captain Jack’s attempts to tip-toe his way to treasure.

Even though The Three Musketeers have been seen onscreen more than two dozen times, director Paul W.S. Anderson has decided to once again update the classic Alexander Dumas tale – in 3D no less. Today we have our first good look at the Musketeers – Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Porthos (Ray Stevenson) and Aramis (Luke Evans) – as well as, the intrepid, young and fearless D’Artagnan (Logan Lerman).  Even though they are “updating” the story, Three Musketeers so far appears to have an authentic  17th century look to it.

Last month we discussed the Worst Belated Sequels in movie history – that is to say a franchise that had too had too much delay between films. Scream 4 could possibly join this list as it’s been 11 years since Scream 3 sliced through theaters – though early screen tests suggest Scream 4 might be good. Most of the original actors and actresses have returned for Scream 4 and below we see Sheriff Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and reporter Gale Weathers-Riley (Courtney Cox) together, as well as, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) in the familiar position of being attacked by the Ghostface killer.

Scream 4 will be in theaters on April 15th.

New Thor Image Depicts An Angry God of Thunder

Marvel Studios Official Thor Movie Costume

Fans of Marvel’s live-action film universe and upcoming superhero films were treated to something special yesterday with the first official look at star Chris Evans in his full 1940s era Captain America costume. The re-designed WWII superhero costume sparked the imaginations of fans who fantasize as to what Captain America will look like when he emerges in the modern era as the leader of The Avengers, standing beside heroes Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and others.

We already know what the other heroes look like when in villain-fighting form, having already witnessed the trailer for Thor and full feature films for Hulk and Iron Man, but another image was released today of the Asgardian Avenger.

Entertainment Weekly again has the exclusive on the latest look of Chris Hemsworth as the titular Thor, wielding his mighty hammer, Mjolnir in a moment of thunderous rage. The image does not reveal anything new about the locations, scene or costume, but you can’t go wrong with an angry God-like superhero gripping a hand-held weapon of mass destruction.

From Anthony Hopkins’ unforgiving Odin to Tom Hiddleston’s jealous Loki, there is a lot of emotion on Asgard.

Marvel President Kevin Feige explains to EW what makes Thor unique compared to other superheroes, outside of this unearthly origins:

“Most Marvel stories are about ordinary people becoming extraordinary… Thor is an already extraordinary individual.”

Outside of a major Thor cameo spoiler, we haven’t seen anything new from Marvel Studios’ next theatrical release since the unveiling of the epic Thor trailer. The focus has instead been on his Earth-born brother in arms, Steve Rogers, and we can expect the first Captain America trailer to debut very soon.

Until then, it’s hard to pick favorites out of the large line-up of big budget superhero blockbusters. In addition to Marvel Studios releasing two epics, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have the competing Green Lantern and Twentieth Century Fox will release their Marvel franchise prequel, X-Men: First Class.

If you’re psyched about Thor, visit Game Rant for the Thor tie-in video game trailer and follow us on Twitter @rob_keyes, @screenrant and @gamerant.

Thor opens in North America May 6, 2011 and  in U.S. theaters and on April 29, 2011 for the UK.

‘Red Dawn’ Image: Wolverines Ready to Battle Chinese Invaders

Red Dawn 2010 remake tagline and logo

Back in 2009 MGM hit the ground running with their remake of the classic ’80s invasion film, Red Dawn. At first there was a whirlwind of activity as the studio moved ahead with project  by hiring a director, casting characters and finding shoot locations in Michigan. Fans of the project felt their excitement build as behind-the-scenes pictures and set videos began popping up online – all of which was supposed to culminate with the September 2010 release.

Then the hammer began to fall -MGM had one heck of a bankruptcy hiccup as it went in and out of negotiations with investors and fought desperately to stave off debtors. Eventually though, MGM’s financial situation became too much for the studio to handle alone as it filed for Chapter 11 and then was sold to Spyglass Entertainment last Fall.

During this time, all of MGM’s projects were put on hold, including Red Dawn, which left a lot of fans wondering if they would ever get to see the completed film. Fans haven’t read any good news or seen any new photos from the film – until now. Thanks from a heads up from our friends at Red Dawn 2010, we have the first complete cast photo of the new Wolverines from the Red Dawn remake over at Daily Blam. Check it out below:

-

The new Wolverines in a cast photo from 2010s Red Dawn

Now for comparison here is the entire cast of the original 1984 Red Dawn:

Original Cast from the 1984 movie Red Dawn

The similarities and differences are easy to spot between the two photos: nine characters compared to seven, three girls compared to two, Urban Outfitter clothing compared to J.C. Penny’s – but are these changes a good thing? Most remake purists (if there is such a thing) were complaining when it was reported the original Russia invaders were swapped for the Chinese and the setting moved from the rural areas of Colorado to the suburban areas of Detroit, Michigan.

Personally, I think change for this Red Dawn is a good thing. The global situation has changed – red Russia is no longer considered to be a hostile threat to America and our own economic situation at home has changed. It makes sense (at least Hollywood sense) that the remaining Communist super power (China) would invade the U.S. (hypothetically speaking of course) and it makes sense they would try to win over the American public with feigned acts of good will.

Red Dawn is Dan Bradley’s first time in the director’s chair so no one can say for sure if he and writers Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia) and Jeremy Passmore have done a good job with all of their changes, but hopefully audiences will get the chance to see for themselves later this year.

Red Dawn stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights), Josh Hutcherson (RV), Josh Peck (Drillbit Taylor), Isabel Lucas (Daybreakers) and Jeffery Dean Morgan (The Losers). Hopefully the film will invade theaters in 2011.
