New Sucker Punch & Battle: Los Angeles Posters

New posters have been released, featuring the five leading ladies of Zack Snyder’s ‘Sucker Punch’ and the latest international one-sheet for ‘Battle: Los Angeles’

Two of the biggest pre-summer releases, which arguably should be summer releases, are that of Sucker Punch and Battle: Los Angeles. Both films made a big introductory splash at San Diego Comic-Con last summer to the most hardcore of movie geeks and since then, have both had very intense, action-packed and downright cool movie trailers.

As  both films prepare for March releases, we’ve seen as much as we can from the trailers and photos thus far without spoiling either. If you’re as excited as we are about either, check out the six brand new posters for Sucker Punch and Battle: Los Angeles, the latter which is internationally known as World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles. You know, because it needs to be emphasized that it’s not all about America.

Sucker Punch is the latest stylistic fantasy action pic by loyal Warner Bros. director Zack Snyder about a girl who’s unwillingly thrown into an institution. Here, she meets and works with fellow inmates to escape, battling their way out through fantastical dream sequences where they fight against dragons, robots, airplanes and more with guns, swords and anything else you can dream of, literally. Think 300, but with ladies and crazier weapons and crazier bad guys. (Click here for latest Sucker Punch trailer).

Battle: Los Angeles, while more grounded in modern reality than Sucker Punch, is a sci-fi actioner and another installment into the recently busy genre of alien invasion films. Heavily armed aliens attack the planet and a group of Marines are forced to fight for an important strategic location in LA, doing what they can to help the local populace. It’s directed by Jonathan Liebesman and often compared to a cross-over between District 9 and Black Hawk Down, where the aliens carry weapons, armor and use vehicles. Sucker Punch Synopsis:

An action fantasy set in the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary. She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls — the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) — to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm). Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man (Scott Glenn), their unbelievable journey — if they succeed — will set them free.

Battle: Los Angeles Synopsis:

For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world — Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before

Movie Poster Roundup: ‘Green Hornet’, ‘Sucker Punch’, ‘Thor’

A sleek black automobile that’s been enhanced with machine guns, rocket launchers, and beanie bag throwers (you read that correctly); gorgeous young women armed to the teeth for combat; and a big, blonde, bearded superhuman carrying his deadly hammer are on display in today’s movie poster roundup.

There’s a new one-sheet for this week’s release, The Green Hornet; an elaborate banner for Zack Snyder’s upcoming Sucker Punch; and a French poster for the comic book flick that will kick off the Summer 2011 movie season, Thor, to check out as well.

Director Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet gets the honor of being the first anticipated tentpole pic to be released in 2011 (sorry, Season of the Witch). Evan Goldberg co-wrote the radio serial/TV show/comic book movie adaptation with his Superbad pal Seth Rogen, who also stars as the Green Hornet (a.k.a., playboy Britt Reid). Asian pop star Jay Chou takes over Bruce Lee’s iconic role as Kato, the brains and brawn behind the Hornet and his operation to fight crime in the streets of Los Angeles.

Recent clips and TV spots have done a good job highlighting the stylish action scenes from Green Hornet (specifically, the “Kato Vision” combat sequences), promoting the movie as mostly just a fast and fun popcorn flick. The film attracted a fair amount of negative buzz back in mid-2010, but recent word of mouth has been much more positive (check back here on Friday to read our verdict).

The Green Hornet and Kato get to wreak havoc on the streets of L.A., thanks to their virtually indestructible and technologically-advanced ride, the Black Beauty. Have a look at the damage left in the vehicle’s wake in the Green Hornet poster (via IMP Awards) below:

There’s a good chance you were more interested in admiring the snazzy visual design of the images or footage released for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch than actually bothering to find out what exactly the film’s plot is. For those who want to know, here’s the basic gist of said plot:

She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive.  Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls—the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish)—to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm).

These girls’ attempts to escape their cruel captors is brought to life via vivid fantasy sequences that pit the leather-and-fishnet-clad ladies against samurai, deadly soldiers, fire-breathing dragons, and giant mechanical monsters. Sucker Punch may not have the most well-developed or layered of storylines, but Snyder knows how to create beautiful visuals and stunning action – so that definitely works in the film’s favor.

Son of Odin and owner of the all-too-cool silver hammer Mjolnir (not Maxwell – kudos for getting this joke), Thor makes the jump to the big screen this summer, under the direction of Shakespeare lover Kenneth Branagh. The film adaptation of the mythological tale-turned-Stan Lee comic book stars Chris Hemsworth as the titular blonde bruiser, who is cast down to live amongst the mortals on Earth after his dad (Anthony Hopkins) tires of his arrogance and thoughtless action.

An official trailer for Thor was released just over a month ago and fans were overall quite receptive to the footage on display – more so than they were after watching the preview for another comic book flick, Green Lantern (for more on that subject, see our Thor vs. Green Lantern trailer showdown).

This new French poster for the film only features the all-mighty Thor in the flesh, but there’s still something cool about the image of Hemsoworth, dressed up in futuristic armor and gazing out dramatically into the distance as his red cape flaps in the wind – we all know it’s true.

The Green Hornet roars into regular, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters around the U.S. this Friday, January 14th.

Sucker Punch blasts its way into theaters on March 25th, 2011.

Three New Images from ‘Sucker Punch’

Zack Snyder is one of those directors that you either love or hate. If you don’t think that’s true, just listen to someone who liked The Watchmen talk to someone who didn’t like it. The conversation can get pretty heated.

I happen to fall into the “love him” camp. In my opinion, Snyder’s hyper-stylized camera work and meticulous attention to set design really add a new dimension to his movies, even when the story-telling is somewhat lacking. That’s one of the reasons why I’m excited to see Snyder’s new action/fantasy film Sucker Punch.

Everything we’ve seen from Sucker Punch so far – from our first look at Comic-Con to the most recent Sucker Punch trailer – has cemented the film as one of our most anticipated movies of 2011. Recently, MovieWeb got a hold of three new images from the film. While not as explosive as some previous material (in the literal sense that they don’t show any explosions), these new images are still quite interesting.

Check out the three new images below. Unfortunately, we don’t have higher resolution versions, but if you’re feeling really desperate for eye-popping action, check out this recent batch of clips from the movie.

As I mentioned before, there’s nothing explosive about these images, but there’s still plenty to admire. One thing that strikes me about the second image is just how much Scott Glenn looks like David Carradine. It’s almost eerie, as if Carradine came from beyond the grave to turn in one last performance as a martial arts master.

As for the first and last images, look at the level of care and detail put into the set design. The calendar/time sheet board behind the girls in the last image is a good example. From the yellowed paper to the different handwriting on each piece of paper, the prop is entirely unique and adds to the look of the scene. It may not seem like much, but small details like that help movies make stronger connections with audiences. Images From ‘Sherlock Holmes 2′, ‘Hangover 2′, ‘Sucker Punch’ & More!

Warner Bros. has released a preview kit for its slate of movies being released between January 2011 and December 2011. Included are some of the first images for some highly anticipated movies – as well as their synopses to clue you in.

Included in the preview are such as movies as Sherlock Holmes 2, The Hangover 2, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Sucker Punch, The Rite, Final Destination 5, Red Riding Hood, Hall Pass, Unknown, Born To Be Wild, Something Borrowed, Horrible Bosses, and The Apparition.

That’s a lot of movies to preview so let’s get started, shall we?

We have the first official image from Sherlock Holmes 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to the hit re-imagining of the classic detective character. Guy Ritchie returns to direct (a job he took on instead of directing Lobo) Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law return to star. This time the duo is joined by the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace.

Guy Ritchie helms a new action-packed adventure, following the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.), and his longtime trusted associate, Dr. Watson (Jude Law), as they match wits with their arch-nemesis, the criminal genius Moriarty (Jared Harris).

I’m so glad to see Rapace has hit the big time after her brilliant turn as Lisbeth Salander in “The Millenium Trilogy” – she’s rumored for many other big roles, including Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels. But as great as it is to see her doing well in Hollywood, I really don’t want to see her settle for starring roles in a string of sequels.

Sherlock Holmes 2 hits theaters on December 16th, 2011.

Next up we have the first official image and the synopsis from another highly-anticipated movie – The Hangover 2. The first film was such a (surprise) monster hit, so I don’t think anyone will be shocked to hear the filmmakers are churning out another one.

One of the absolute key things that made the first film work was the chemistry between the four main characters – and it’s good to see the whole gang is back for more crude shenanigans.

Take a look at the first image from The Hangover 2 featuring Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zack Galifianakis), and Doug (Justin Bartha), followed by the official synopsis which finally reveals why the gang are going to Thailand:

In the follow-up to the record-breaking hit comedy “The Hangover,” Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can’t even be imagined.

The Hangover 2 opens in theaters on May 26th, 2011.

Moving on we have an image from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the much anticipated second part to the final Harry Potter film. If you’ve been following the promo materials for Deathly Hallows (how could you possibly not be?) then you’ll recognize this image which features Lord Voldemort grabbing Harry by the throat.

Take a look at the image below (we’ve seen the image on its own before but this is the proper version courtesy of WB):

In Part 2 of the epic finale, the battle between the good and evil forces of the Wizarding world escalates into an all-out war. The stakes have never been higher and no one is safe. But it is Harry Potter who may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as he draws closer to the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort. It all ends here.

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Nevertheless, the film definitely had a lot of great moments (not to mention the best acting we’ve seen from the lead trio thus far) and I’m sure Part 2 will deliver the spectacular showdown the franchise has been building to for almost a decade.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hits 3D, IMAX, and regular theaters on July 15th, 2011.

‘Sucker Punch’ Clips Are Short & Sweet

The eye-popping scenery, exuberant action and visual panache of the Sucker Punch footage released so far indicates that Zack Snyder explored the deep recesses of his imagination (or, rather, revisited the doodles he made as a 14 year-old comic book nerd with sugar pumping through his veins) in order to come up with this stuff.

Five new clips have been released from Snyder’s Sucker Punch -- which is based off a story of his own creation -- and while they’re brief, they pack quite the visceral punch (pun mildly intended).

Brunette Emily Browning died her hair platinum blonde to play Babydoll in Sucker Punch, which revolves around the character’s attempt to escape a brutal mental institution via the assistance of her fellow inmates: Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (dark-haired Vanessa Hudgens), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish). Villains in this video game (cheap shot, we know) darkly fantastical adventure include the cruel Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino), and the mysterious High Roller (Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm).

The second Sucker Punch trailer and official movie synopsis provided moviegoers with a better idea of what to expect from Snyder’s project, in terms of story and style -- though whether or not that’s a good thing depends on your personal point of view.

Those that found the plot elements and dialogue on display in the most recent Sucker Punch theatrical preview to be a distraction from the jaw-dropping visuals -- these short, no-holds-barred, action-packed clips will be much more to your liking.

Battlemechs, dragons, orc-like monsters, samurai, explosions, gunfire, and a pack of young attractive women clad in black leather armor, ready for battle -- Sucker Punch‘s fantasy sequences look to cover all fanboy bases and feature something for anyone who consider themselves even remotely geeky.

Will the gloomy tale at the heart Sucker Punch be as engaging as the visual mayhem on display? Early reviews are split as to whether or not the film works as a whole, but we’re still eagerly awaiting the arrival of this one in theaters, if only because, well… battlemechs and samurai.
