‘Unknown’ Trailer #2 & TV Spots

Unknown trailer TV spots

In 2008, veteran actor Liam Neeson proved himself a competent modern day action star with the surprise hit Taken, some say even giving Jason Bourne a run for his money… and that’s saying something!. Now Neeson is back in action with Unknown, a new mystery thriller co-starring January Jones (X-Men: First Class, Mad Men) and Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds).

Way back in October of last year we got a look at the official trailer for Unknown. Today we have a new trailer and three TV spots to try and get us excited about the movie. But before we get to them, let’s remind ourselves of the plot:

A man (Neeson) awakens from a coma, only to discover that someone has taken on his identity and that no one, (not even his wife), believes him. With the help of a young woman (Kruger), he sets out to prove who he is.

Now that you’re clued in -- certainly a lot more than Neeson’s character! :P -- check out the latest trailer and TV spots for Unknown:

UNKNOWN TRAILER #2

-

The trailer doesn’t provide us with much in the way of new footage and basically acts as a condensed version of the official trailer we saw last year. However, the TV spots do give us some fresh footage that hints at what might really be going on with Neeson’s character. For instance, in the third TV spot we hear Neeson talking about going insane -- could it be that Neeson really is crazy and that he isn’t Dr. Martin Harris after all? Or is that exactly what these mysterious people who appear to have stolen his identity want him to think?

I look forward to unraveling the mystery when Unknown opens in a few weeks’ time. Although the film doesn’t look to be anything overly memorable and certainly not a mystery/thriller classic, at the very least it should provide for some nice twists and turns, as well as a platform for Neeson to kick ass once again.

Unknown opens in U.S. theaters on February 18th, 2011.

Nic Cage is Rage On Wheels in ‘Drive Angry 3D’ Clips, TV Spots, & Poster

Drive Angry 3D movie clips poster Nicolas Cage

Like a bat out of hell, sporting a fresh new blonde hairdo and a nasty scar around his left eye, Nicolas Cage will be back in theaters next month with Drive Angry 3D -- an R-Rated thrill ride from director Patrick Lussier, the man that threw pickaxes at the camera in his 3D remake of My Bloody Valentine.

A couple of new clips and TV spots have been released for the upcoming crazy Cage vehicle (not the one currently in theaters, Season of the Witch), along with another poster that features the Oscar-winner looking… less than utterly pleased.

Drive Angry 3D stars Cage as Milton, a hard-edged, recently-deceased criminal who breaks out of Hell in order to save his infant granddaughter from being sacrificed by a vicious cult (no, not the one that broke Cage’s kneecaps in The Wicker Man). Milton teams up with Piper (Amber Heard), a waitress with a ’69 Charger who is also seeking to make amends for her past deeds, and the two pursue the cult’s merciless leader (Billy Burke) -- all while a demonic agent known only as The Accountant (William Fichtner) attempts to capture Milton and return him to the Devil’s lair.

Those that watched either the international trailer or U.S. theatrical preview know that Drive Angry 3D aims to be a guilty pleasure of the most deliciously exploitative kind -- one that offers tons of explosions, car crashes, gunfire, Amber Heard’s bare legs, and Nic Cage at his most badass in the third dimension. For more of just that, watch Fitchner’s Accountant destroy a blockade of police cars via a hydro-truck in the clip below:

There’s another very NSFW clip online from Drive Angry 3D that answers the question: “What happens when you put a fully-dressed Nic Cage, three thugs, along with some booze, bullets, and a naked broad in a hotel room together?” Check it out HERE - if you dare.

Finally, be sure to check out the tamer but still action-heavy Drive Angry 3D TV spots and poster (via IMP Awards) below:

New TV Spots and Images for ‘The Eagle’

The Eagle TV spots images

Hollywood is not exactly averse to trying its hand at historical epics -- with films like Gladiator, Robin Hood (both by director Ridley Scott), 300, Pathfinder, The Last Samurai, and the motion-capture visual feast that was Beowulf all being released in the 21st century alone.

Next month we’re going to have another one of those historical action films on our hands in the form of the Roman epic The Eagle. Last month we got a look at the trailer for the movie and it looked to be the PG-13, some would say safer, version of Brit director Neil Marshall’s Centurion. Following the surprisingly decent-looking trailer for The Eagle, Focus Features has released some new TV spots and images for the film.

Before we get to the new promo stuff, take a look at the official synopsis for The Eagle:

In 140 A.D., two men – master and a slave – venture beyond the edge of the known world on a dangerous and obsessive quest that will push them beyond the boundaries of loyalty and betrayal, friendship and hatred, deceit and heroism. Twenty years earlier, Rome’s 5,000-strong Ninth Legion, under the command of Flavius Aquila, marched north carrying their treasured golden Eagle emblem. They never returned; Legion and Eagle simply vanished into the mists.

Hearing a rumor that the Eagle has been seen in a tribal temple in the far north, Flavius’ son Marcus (Tatum), determined to restore the tarnished reputation of his father, is galvanized into action. Accompanied only by his slave Esca (Bell), Marcus sets out into the vast and dangerous highlands of Scotland – to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and retrieve the hallowed Eagle.

The obvious comparison -- which fellow Screen Rant writer Sandy Schaefer noted when the trailer was released last November -- is to Neil Marshall’s underrated Centurion but The Eagle also reminds me of last year’s Robin Hood. Even though the two are set in widely different time periods and are not connected story-wise, the aesthetic of both films is similar. And something tells me The Eagle will follow in Robin Hood‘s footsteps by having lots of violence but none as overly graphic as the violence found in the aforementioned Centurion.

One of the main reasons I am looking forward to The Eagle is the fact that it’s directed by Kevin MacDonald. No, it’s not just because he’s also from Scotland ( :-P ) but rather I am a big fan of his two previous (fiction) features, The Last King of Scotland and State of Play. Although MacDonald is treading new ground with this historical action movie, from what we’ve seen from the the movie so far, I have faith that he will deliver the goods.

The Eagle stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Mark Strong, Donald Sutherland and Dennis O’Hare. The film, as stated, is directed by MacDonald and the script was penned by Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland) from the book The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff.

The Eagle lands in U.S. theaters on February 11th, 2011.

‘Season of the Witch’ & ‘The Rite’ TV Spots

The Rite TV spots

Witches, demons, Nicolas Cage, oh my! Horror is the name of the game this week as Mr. Cage’s long-delayed Season of the Witch finally hits theaters. Anthony Hopkins will round out the month’s collection of horror (and horrible) movies by appearing in the exorcism tale, The Rite.

Several TV spots have been released for both films, which feature (among other things) milky-eyed monsters and humans, rat-eating corpses, women who spit out nails, and men looking on in concern at this highly unorthodox behavior.

Season of the Witch stars Cage as Behmen, a Crusader who must transport a mysterious girl (Claire Foy) to a monastery where she will have her supposed sorceress powers removed -- assuming that she is a witch and not something far more dangerous (*dramatic clap of thunder*). Those who have already watched either the most recent trailer and/or clips from Season of the Witch likely understand why this cheesy supernatural thriller is being sprung on moviegoers at the beginning of January.

Cage is generally entertaining to watch, even when he’s not wearing a floppy wig while doing battle with winged creatures and girls seemingly possessed by dark, sinister forces. Season of the Witch looks pretty silly, what with its fake-looking CGI wolves and standard slo-mo battle sequences, but it could make for a fun if fleeting few hours at the cinema this weekend.

Check out the Season of the Witch TV spots below and see what you think (kudos if you don’t tire of hearing Ron Pearlman ask “What madness is this?” by the end):

Colin O’Donaghue stars as seminary student Michael Kovak in 1408 director Mikael Hafstrom’s upcoming exorcism thriller, The Rite. Kovak is a skeptic forced to attend exorcism school at the Vatican, where he encounters the eccentric Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), a man perhaps a bit too well versed in waging battle with the devil’s minions.

Neither the first theatrical preview or the second trailer for The Rite made it look like anything but a run of the mill exorcism story, complete with clichés that include seemingly possessed young women, a priest literally battling for his soul, and dramatic cuts/flashes of people with unnatural eye colors. The film itself might offer something more, but we have strong doubts about that.

Watch TV spots for The Rite below:

Season of the Witch arrives in theaters this Friday, January 7th.

The Rite hits theaters in the U.S. on January 28th, 2011.

Three New ‘Green Hornet’ TV Spots

Green Hornet movie TV spots

We recently got a double-whammy of Green Hornet awesomeness when the second domestic and international trailers hit the web. Now we have even more promo materials to get you excited for this latest superhero movie, in the form of three brand new TV spots.

Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) directs Seth Rogen and Jay Chou in The Green Hornet, with the acting duo playing the titular superhero and his assistant, Kato. Rogen and Chou are joined by Cameron Diaz and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Bastards) as the love interest and villain, respectively.

The Green Hornet stars Rogen as playboy-turned masked superhero Britt Reid, who teams up with his recently-deceased father’s assistant, Kato (Chou), and sets out to fight crime in the streets of L.A. via a technologically-enhanced, 1960s model Imperial car dubbed the “Black Beauty.” The two eventually hatch an ingenious scheme to take down the leader of L.A.’s criminal underworld, Benjamin Chudnofsky (Waltz): pose as criminals themselves, in order to get closer to the man.

Check out the three new Green Hornet TV spots below:

I love the Iron Man vibe that The Green Hornet is constantly giving off -- that mix of fun action with wry comedy should hopefully provide the same sort of entertainment that made the first, and a lot of the second, Iron Man so enjoyable. Rogen is obviously an unlikely superhero (he’s admitted that himself on many occasions) but in a way that’s a good thing, since it means he’ll be more relatable as an everyman who gets swept up in this fantastical world.

Even more of a strange choice than Rogen was Gondry as a director. He was an unusual choice because he’s only ever done smaller-scale, very intimate films (he was one of the last directors I’d think of for a superhero movie) but by the looks of things he was an inspired choice for The Green Hornet. His inventive visual style should hopefully set the film apart from the million-and-one other superhero movies out there.

Green Hornet is set to hit 3D and regular theaters on January 14th, 2011.
