Paramount Moving Forward With New ‘Pet Sematary’ Movie

Stephen King Pet Sematary movie Paramount

There appears to be somewhat of a new Stephen King obsession going on in Hollywood right now. Last September we heard about a huge movie/TV crossover adaptation of King’s epic Dark Tower series; a new movie based on IT has been in the works for almost two years; and just a couple of days ago we heard word of Warner Bros. developing a new film based on King’s beloved book The Stand.

To add to those three we’re going to be getting a new adaptation of one of King’s  beloved novels: Pet Sematary, the book which the author himself regards as his scariest.

We reported on the new new Pet Sematary movie way back in March of last year, with 1408 screenwriter Matthew Greenberg being hired to pen the script. Since then we haven’t heard much about the status of the project… until now.

24 Frames reports of the news that Paramount is moving forward with the new Pet Sematary film, with Greenberg set to turn in a draft of the script soon. It’s noted that this info comes from someone familiar with the project who wasn’t supposed to speak about it publicly. The studio is said to be seeking a high-profile director to helm the film, although no names were specifically mentioned and Paramount declined to comment.

This is, of course, not the first time King’s haunting Pet Sematary has made its way to the big-screen. In 1989 a movie was made from a script King wrote himself and starred Dale Midkiff, Fred Gwynne and Denise Crosby. It’s certainly not one of the most highly-regarded King films, but I still have memories of it having a very creepy atmosphere. A sequel to that film was made in 1992 with a surprisingly notable cast which included Clancy Brown, Edward Furlong and Anthony Edwards.

Pet Sematary tells the story of a family who moves into a new house but soon discover a mysterious pet cemetery  not far from their new home. What unfolds involves all manner of death-related incidents involving both animals and humans. It’s certainly not for those of you who have a strong fear of cats! :-P

I, for one, am actually okay with this particular remake/new adaptation. The original isn’t exactly the best translation of a King story and in the right hands a lot of very cool and scary things could be done with a new movie. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Greenberg’s adaptation of King’s 1408 and that fact that he wrote the lackluster Halloween H20 doesn’t exactly inspire much confidence.

However, I am personally more interested in who Paramount will pick as a director. Hopefully it’s someone with experience in horror filmmaking who will still steer Pet Sematary in the right direction. I suppose Frank Darabont – writer and director of King-based films like The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist – would be too much to hope for?

More on this new version of Pet Sematary as news comes out.

Federal Agency GSA Moving To Google Apps Agencywide

December 2 2010 by admin in News |

The General Services Administration (GSA) has awarded a $6.7 million five-year contract to Unisys Corp under the Alliant Governmentwide Acquisition Contract, which, partnered with Google and others, will move the entire agency into cloud-based services.

The GSA will become the first federal agency to move email to the cloud agencywide, with all of its employees moving over to the new system (other agencies have moved ‘sub-entity’ emails to the cloud before, but not agencywide). The GSA says that the move will save taxpayers $15 million over five years (other agencies have moved sub-entities’ e-mails to the cloud, GSA is the first to utilize a cloud-based system for e-mail agencywide).

Casey Coleman, GSA Chief Information Officer said in a press release:

Cloud computing has a demonstrated track record of cost savings and efficiencies. With this award, GSA employees will have a modern, robust e-mail and collaboration platform that better supports our mission and our mobile work force, and costs half as much.

Google told us that, “After a competitive bidding process that took place over the past six months, [the] GSA just announced that it will move its 15,500 employees to Google Apps for Government.” Google also says that it will be releasing a statement on the Official Google Blog shortly. When it does so, we’ll update here.

Just yesterday, we reported that a Microsoft exec unsurprisingly bashed Google’s enterprise ambitions, and while government isn’t exactly enterprise, it’s pretty close, so this is certainly a substantial win for Google in the government/enterprise sector, whomever the other bidders where (the GSA did not list them in the press release, though we are trying to find out who they were).

Emma Stone NOT Moving Into ’21 Jump Street’

Emma Stone not starring in 21 Jump Street

For a couple of months now, Superbad and Easy A actress Emma Stone has been rumored to play one of the main roles in the upcoming new movie version of the ’80s TV series, 21 Jump Street. As it turns out however, things haven’t worked out that way as word comes from Stone herself that she will NOT be starring.

Stone revealed the news in an interview with MTV, confirming that she won’t be joining the cast of 21 Jump Street alongside Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, the latter of which who was recently revealed as Sony’s top contender to play one of the leads opposite Hill. Stone told MTV that, “I don’t think I’m going to be part of that [movie],” but that Hill is still, “one of my favorite people in the entire world.”

The reason Stone is out of the 21 Jump Street movie is likely because of her being cast as Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man reboot. She was rumored for Jump Street back in September but I imagine Spider-Man snapping her up in October put a spanner in the works so to speak. MTV asked Stone directly if she’d still be able to star in Jump Street despite her being committed to Spider-Man but she jokingly replied, “I think Channing Tatum swept in.”

Emma Stone cast as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man reboot

Speaking of Spider-Man, Stone told MTV yesterday that they start shooting the reboot in a couple of weeks, which means everything is right on schedule:

“Today I went and did hair tests, because I have blonde hair now since Gwen has blonde hair. My natural hair is blonde, so it’s kind of nice. I looked in the mirror and said, “Oh my god, it’s me again, it’s been so long!” We’re finalizing the visual stuff. And I think we’ll start actually rehearsing, because we start shooting in two weeks. Andrew and I went and learned about science yesterday. Gwen really likes science, so we learned about science. I was home-schooled, so I never went to chemistry class in a traditional setting like Gwen is into. That was really beneficial.”

I would have to liked to have seen Stone star in the Jump Street, if nothing else to see her reunited with Hill, whom she starred with in the 2007 hit comedy Superbad. Although I wasn’t a big fan of that movie, I did like the chemistry she had with Hill and I think her savvy and charming presence would work well with the type of movie Hill and writer Michael Bacall are apparently aiming for with this reboot. Hill has previously described his vision for the reboot as an, “R-rated, insane, Bad Boys-meets-John-Hughes-type movie.” Fans of the original ’80s series will know that description is changing things up quite a bit.

Emma Stone might join Jonah Hill on 21 Jump Street

With Stone out of 21 Jump Street I guess that leaves a key female role vacant – who do you want to see starring alongside Hill and Tatum in the reboot?

21 Jump Street is aiming to start shooting next March, with a release date slated for March 16, 2012.
