Home Ministry seems to be all set to strengthen its grips on the technology companies these days. After pestering RIM to the level of suggesting a ban on BlackBerry services to share access of data transfer through its devices, home ministry is now targeting Microsoft, Google, IBM and Oracle. These companies provide technology and services for the virtual private networks (VPNs) run by various operators in India.
Home Ministry’s concerns
Intelligence reports point out that vendors offer VPN services /technology that do not conform to government instructions. Home Ministry has asked DoT to issue VPN service providers and technology developers time bound notices to provide solutions for lawful interception of data encrypted by these technologies. Failure to do so could result in the termination of VPN services by operators using their technology.
None of the four companies have commented on this issue till now.

A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the Internet to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization’s network.

Home Ministry’s latest target of companies offering VPN technology, access to data transferred through BlackBerry devices clearly shows that Home Ministry is waking up to the new channels of sharing data and is ensuring that none of these remain untapped from the security measure point of view. It is essential for the national security and integrity to have well established rules for data transfer through new technologies.
