Home Ministry targets VPN Providers

Some Thoughts

Home Ministry’s latest target of companies offering VPN technology, access to data transferred through BlackBerry devices clearly shows that Home Ministry is waking up to the new channels of sharing data and is ensuring that none of these remain untapped from the security measure point of view. It is essential for the national security and integrity to have well established rules for data transfer through new technologies. If you enjoyed this post, make sure you subscribe to our RSS Feed OR Email Alerts!

HRD Ministry Joins Hands With UID Authority For Students In India

Through this collaboration

As per the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed, UIDAI will help keep a record of all students, right from kindergarten to graduation. HRD Minister Kapil Sibal hopes to have the unique identification numbers printed on everything from report cards, merit certificates to transfer certificates. HRD also plans to link education loans and scholarship to the students educational history. This will help employers as well in identifying a students original marklist, and thus his performance through the course of his education.

The ministry will also put in place an institutional mechanism to effectively oversee and monitor the implementation of the UID project and provide logistic and liaison support to the staff and representatives of UIDAI.

Benefits for students

According to Mr. Sibal, this system will help cut down the number of drop outs by tracking the performance of a student and providing necessary guidance wherever required. Also, the ministry believes that with the help of UID, the Mid-Day meal scheme can be implemented in a better fashion. Mid-Day meal scheme provides lunch to students free of cost to all students on all working days. This collaboration also means that only students worthy of a job will get it as the chance of replicating a mark list is minimized.

This move is a huge step forward in India’s education system. Such ideas from the HRD are more than welcome and hopefully this is just the beginning. What do you think about the HRD ministry and UID authority joining hands?

Home Ministry targets VPN Providers

Home Ministry seems to be all set to strengthen its grips on the technology companies these days. After pestering RIM to the level of suggesting a ban on BlackBerry services to share access of data transfer through its devices, home ministry is now targeting Microsoft, Google, IBM and Oracle. These companies provide technology and services for the virtual private networks (VPNs) run by various operators in India.

Home Ministry’s concerns

Intelligence reports point out that vendors offer VPN services /technology that do not conform to government instructions.  Home Ministry has asked DoT to issue VPN service providers and technology developers time bound notices to provide solutions for lawful interception of data encrypted by these technologies. Failure to do so could result in the termination of VPN services by operators using their technology.

None of the four companies have commented on this issue till now.

So, what is VPN?

A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the Internet to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization’s network.

Ministry of silly walks

Fans of US TV series The West Wing, which until 2006 portrayed the inner workings of a fictional White House, might have experienced deja vu on reading my colleague's article last week on how scientists at NASA are working on identifying people from satellite images of their shadows. Their trick is to spot signs of a person's gait - their characteristic pattern of walking.

The series slipped up badly on this very subject in one 2003 episode, in which someone from a thinly disguised Slashdot says he has a tipoff about military research on mind control.

Horrified press spokesperson C J Cregg looks into it and is visited by a scientist from US defence research agency DARPA - one of the most hilariously portrayed nerds TV has ever screened.

Things soon turn nasty for viewers, though. The dialogue proceeds to jumble together the MK-Ultra project of the 1960s, in which the CIA really did use drugs for mind control, with more current research, by DARPA and others. This ranged from tiny cameras to adhesives based on gecko feet to mind-computer interfaces to, yes, gait analysis. Except this gait analysis was supposed to tell if a person is a potential criminal. Nonsense.

A colleague tells Cregg to leak the story to the press, so this horror will be shut down. Sadly that is where the show veered back towards the real world. True, horrific research such as MK-Ultra has been done in the name of security. But some research by the military, especially blue-sky types like DARPA, is merely banal, and even beneficial - like this internet thing you are currently using.

Much fear of science is engendered by the sloppy, arm-waving, button-pushing alarmism that results when commentators garble all research with horrors like MK-Ultra. And sometimes good research is threatened by this fear.

In this case, the otherwise brilliant writers of West Wing engaged in just such sloppiness. Disappointing, but cautionary - an occasion, in this US election year, to remind ourselves to beware such dishonest portrayals of science, even by writers we can otherwise trust.

HRD Ministry Joins Hands With UID Authority For Students In India

HRD has been in the news off late, and mostly for good reasons. Unlike promising and failing to deliver as in the past, the ministry of Human Resources Development came good with the $35 tablet and recently issued a tender for the same. Now in another interesting and thoughtful move, HRD has teamed up with the UID authority to keep track of a student’s movement.

UIDAI, HRD ministry join hands for the children

Through this collaboration

As per the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed, UIDAI will help keep a record of all students, right from kindergarten to graduation. HRD Minister Kapil Sibal hopes to have the unique identification numbers printed on everything from report cards, merit certificates to transfer certificates. HRD Ministry Issues Tender For Rs 1,500-PC

Desired Functionalities and Specifications

The list of minimum functionalities desired from the device is pretty impressive which include Support for video web Conferencing, Multimedia content viewer (.pdf, docx,.jpeg etc.), Media player capable of playing streamed as well as stored media files, Internet browsing, Wireless communication for Audio/video, Cloud computing option, Remote device management capability, Rendering YouTube and other online video services.

The specifications include suitable motherboard, QWERTY keyboard, mouse and a minimum display of 7 inch color LCD/TFT (Touch screen optional) besides three hours or more uninterrupted operation through battery or battery less device. Battery support through solar cell, or Hybrid Capacitor, embedded webcam are other desirable features expected in the device. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Rajasthan, has been allotted two projects for purchase and intensive testing of the device. The institute will purchase 100,000 such devices and carry out intensive laboratory and field tests across the country to ensure suitability in all geographical regions and in all climatic conditions.

It would be unfair to compare this tablet with any other tablet available in the market. While the other tablets aim at the so called aspirational sections of the society, the ones who have access to the technological gains and who are willing to adapt, this tablet is meant for those who are deprived from such gains.

The Real test

Touted as the world’s cheapest computing tablet, the device so far has created much hoopla amongst the masses. But the real test is to find manufacturers who will be able to produce these devices at such a low price and continue doing it. But this also gives opportunity to innovate and evolve. Remember,  when Tata Nano was announced every other business said that it can’t be made that cheap. Now, Nissan, Renault, Honda and many other companies are trying to follow suite.

This low cost tablet could serve as another chance to demonstrate our technological prowess and by all means a challenge worth fighting for. The device can open the world of possibilities for dramatic technology-aided development and universal access to information and knowledge. Being wired and connected would be doubly advantageous for a youthful society like ours. But without quality power supply, modern roads and housing, our human resource potential would remain unrealized and suboptimal. We want this device to transform the education sector but to leverage the huge societal potential of efficient and lowcost computing, the general neglect of public education – teacher absenteeism, lack of basic facilities  particularly at the primary and secondary levels need to be set right.

Whether this tablet will be a reality or just another attempt to lure the citizens? Whether it will achieve all the objectives it is destined for?  Whether it will gain acceptance from the masses as a ubiquitous computing device? The questions are manifold. And the answers to these questions will affect the society and hence the individuals.

It is fun to be cynical but faith works in wondrous ways.  So I am hopeful that this device will transform the education sector and society. Are you? Do let me know your views on it.
