Look out, CBS; you no longer hold the distinction for most bizarre sitcom title. #$*! My Dad Says is passing the torch to a new series on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim Channel. How’s this for a name? National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sport Utility Vehicle – or NTSF:SD:SUV for short.
NTSF:SD:SUV – an obvious parody of the endless police procedurals dominating the airwaves – just received a 12-episode order from Adult Swim, the adult-oriented cable television offshoot of Cartoon Network, owned by Turner Broadcasting System. The program’s roots stem from a mock promo that aired during the network’s medical show spoof, Rob Corrdry’s Childrens’ Hospital.
The project, created by and starring Paul Scheer, somehow managed to buck the trend of going through a pilot stage and skipped right on through to a series order. Scheer, who has been excellent in The League, Childrens’ Hospital and almost everything else he makes an appearance in, will write as well as share executive producing credit with Hospital producer Joe Stern.
With a name like NTSF:SD:SUV, the show has got to be good. Or… not. Judging by the cricket-inducing trailer below, it may be a tough road ahead. Having viewed the clip several times, comparisons to this year’s MacGruber disaster are difficult to avoid.
However, the show may just be what the world of television needs: a downright silly comedy that pokes fun at all the mediocre CSI-esque dramas that clog up the top of the ratings charts. If any genre is ripe for parody, it has got to be these procedural dramas.
When CSI first came on the scene, it was fresh and provided viewers with the opportunity to witness things they had never seen before. It wasn’t long before the offshoots began, and the police procedural genre has steadily transformed into safe, tedious, paint-by-numbers television genre ever since.
Whether this new entry into the world of police procedurals (albeit one that openly mocks the genre) can successfully make us laugh remains to be seen. Regardless, its mere presence should serve as a reminder that the genre is far too over saturated and soon needs to be put to rest.
Hopefully, the collective talent of those involved with the project (including Rob Riggle, Brandon Johnson and June Raphael – who will make appearances but not as series regulars) will help the show rise above the lackluster material in the trailer.
NTSF:SD:SUV is expected to air sometime in 2011.
