New ‘Castle’ Promo Offers Quite A Tease

Castle Season 3 promo hints at kiss with Beckett

Onscreen duos with romantic chemistry like Sam and Diane from Cheers, Ross and Rachel from Friends, Mulder and Scully from The X-Files, and perhaps most infamously, David and Maddie from Moonlighting, have all teased fans with one ecstatic moment built from years of delayed gratification. As television viewers have long known, the time inevitably comes when several seasons worth of romantic tension will finally have to be snapped.

A new teaser for ABC’s Castle hints that the show is ready to join that pantheon of television romances. After nearly three seasons of flirting, innuendo and suggestion, will Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Detective Beckett (Stana Katic) finally seal the deal?

The following clip could be the real deal or just an out of context smooch designed to tease. A quick analysis suggests the kiss could go either way. Does Det. Beckett have more on her mind than how “close” she can get to Castle? Is Castle confounded, or anxiously awaiting this overdue embrace? As the episode’s airdate on Jan. 24th rapidly approaches, we won’t have to wait long in order to find out.

Beyond murders, Castle has always been about the romantic attraction felt by its two leads. So, if Castle and Beckett stop playing and get serious, what will the repercussions be? Well, they certainly don’t have to be all gloom and doom, and Moonlighting curses.

While the show isn’t stale by any means, Castle having a better reason to see Beckett than a dead body might be a nice change to what is perhaps becoming a slew of very similar storylines. Furthermore, creating a deeper relationship between Beckett and the rest of Castle’s family—his daughter Alexis (Molly C. Quinn) and his thespian mother Martha (Susan Sulivan) may just generate some new and exciting situations. Those who fear a Castle/Beckett lip-lock might herald the proverbial jumping of the shark, and suck all the passion and flavor from the show need not worry. Katic’s past comments show she is clearly not taken in by all the superstition.

ABC doesn’t believe in curses either, apparently. Castle has already been picked up for the full 2011-2012 season.

‘Castle’: Are Beckett and Castle Finally Getting Together?

Castle & Becket Finally Getting Together?

On ABC’s lighthearted murder mystery series Castle, Nathan Fillion’s (Firefly, Serenity) titular author and Stana Katic’s Detective Beckett have been circling each other since the very first episode. Many fans are tired of the song and dance, but their patience may soon be rewarded.

Recently, Katic teased that the January 10th episode would bring the two characters “closer than they’ve ever gotten before.” Considering the steamy conclusion to the second season last Spring, that doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for speculation.

When Entertainment Weekly spoke to Katic before the American Music Awards last weekend, she was eager to spill some plot details – but before doing so, Katic wanted to reassure Castle fans that having the two leads in a close personal relationship wouldn’t ruin the fast, chatty dynamic the show has enjoyed so far.

“They are meant to be. I think they can be a couple and still be spicy and funny. Everyone else is like, ‘Oh no we can’t do that. That will ruin it. That will kill the show.’ [A Moonlighting] curse has come up. But no way, man. Don’t believe in it at all.”

Despite Katic’s protestations, it’s hard to believe that a monogamous relationship between Castle and Beckett wouldn’t fundamentally change the show. The banter between the talky manchild and the hard-boiled detective has helped differentiate the series from the crowded space of procedural crime shows, and a dynamic-shifting love story can spell doom for a young series. That said, the sexual tension between the two characters has gotten pretty extreme, especially after the second season’s revealing finale. Fans may not care about the long-term implications if Castle and Beckett can just get a freakin’ room.

Some writers and producers have been reluctant to pair off tentpole characters ever since Moonlighting in the ’80s, when a steamy relationship between Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepherd’s characters destroyed the successful show in its third season. Many have speculated that this stigma is what kept the leads on the competing Fox series Bones apart for so long.

Castle & Beckett Kiss

It’s not as if such a move has never worked, and the writers should be comfortable and confident enough in their characters to give it a try – assuming Stana Katic isn’t just toying with us. The coming addition of Laura Prepon may play out in the arc surrounding movie versions of Castle’s novels next year.

The answers to your burning questions will be revealed on Castle in January.

‘Castle’ Investigates Laura Prepon & Thomas Calabro for Guest Roles

Laura Prepon Guest Star Castle

The universe of ABC’s weekly whodunit is about to get a lot more confusing. See if you can follow: in Castle, Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity) plays a millionaire crime novelist akin to James Patterson, who follows NYPD detective Kate Beckett (played by Stana Katic) in order to get inspiration for his series of novels.

The characters of the novels mirror Castle and Beckett’s ‘real’ relationship.

TV Guide reports that Laura Prepon, best known for her role as Donna in That 70s Show, will play an actress hired for the movie role of Nikki Heat, Beckett’s literary counterpart. In addition, Prepon’s actress-character, Natalie Gray, will tail Castle and Beckett for inspiration of her own.

So, Prepon is a real actress, playing a fictional actress, playing a fictional role, based on a fictional novel, based on a ‘real’ fictional cop. Except that the books Castle writes aren’t entirely fictitious (even if they are fictional), ABC has hired ghost writers and published the books that Fillion’s character writes - which you can buy in a real bookstore.

By contrast, the news about Melrose Place veteran Thomas Calabro is pretty straightforward. Calabro will a murder suspect in an investigation surrounding a matchmaker for high-class Manhattanites.

Both Calabro and Prepon have played relatively minor roles since their breakouts. Prepon had a lead role ABC’s short-lived October Road and Calabro reprised his role of Dr. Mancini in CW’s revival of Melrose – which fizzled out after just nine episodes earlier this year.

The Cast of ABC's

Castle has found a good niche as light hearted murder-mystery among more serious fare like Law & Order: SVU and TNT’s The Closer.

Nathan Fillion’s status as an underground sci-fi star has helped the show along considerably. After Buffy and Firefly, he’s made the rounds on geek-favorite shows such as Justice League Unlimited, Robot Chicken, and The Venture Brothers as well as roles in Slither, Whedon pet project Dr. Horrible, and the recent Wonder Woman direct-to-video movie.

Fillion and co-star Stana Katic have excellent chemistry in a flirty arc that’s been building since the series began. Screen Rant readers may recognize Katic from the latest Librarian TV movie and a brief recurring role in the 5th season of 24.

Both Laura Prepon and Thomas Calabro are set to appear in the January 3rd episode; though, Prepon’s role may continue for a few episodes more.

Castle airs Monday nights at 10pm on ABC.
