New ThunderCats Animated Toy Offers First Look at Snarf

thundercats-2011-concept-art-hi-res

The live-action Thundercats film may still be in Hollywood turnaround purgatory but the recently announced animated reboot is Thunder, Thunder, ThunderCats Ho!

Fans who thought they might never see the ThunderCats gracing a television screen again will be glad to know that not only is the 80s remake on schedule for its 2011 premiere on Cartoon Network, but Warner Bros. Consumer Products has already started marketing toys for the series – and the re-imagined Thunder Tank gives us our first look at fan-favorite character, Snarf.

One week ago, we reported on concept art that offered fans a first look at Studio 4°C’s Eastern-inspired animation style – as well as the principle characters Lion-O, Panthro, Tygra, and Cheetara. However, noticeably absent was the team’s pet/side kick/comic relief Snarf.

Now, SuperHeroHype has a first look at some of the new ThunderCats action figures including Lion-O, Cheetara, a deluxe play Sword of Omens, as well as the Thunder Tank – which comes packaged with Snarf.

Check out the images of the Thunder Tank box art as well as a close-up of Snarf further below:

The box art still don’t offer any hints as to who exactly Lion-O and his team will be facing off against but it’s definitely interesting to get a peak at the redesigned Snarf. The updated character design certainly fits with the new art style as well as, judging by this single image, gives Snarf a younger-looking/sleeker (by comparison) body shape.

The Thunder Tank is equally reverent to the source material while adding the necessary edge to compete with other modern cartoon series.

In case you’re feeling nostalgic, and let’s face it, that’s why these series are making a comeback. Check out the images of the original Thunder Tank box art and Snarf below:

While Cartoon Network is keeping certain details (enemies, new characters, etc.) under wraps, the network has released a basic plot synopsis to give fans a brief taste of what’s to come:

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

Follow us on Twitter @iambenkendrick and @screenrant and let us know what you think of the redesigned ThunderCats.

The new ThunderCats animated series will debut in 2011 on Cartoon Network.

New ‘Castle’ Promo Offers Quite A Tease

Castle Season 3 promo hints at kiss with Beckett

Onscreen duos with romantic chemistry like Sam and Diane from Cheers, Ross and Rachel from Friends, Mulder and Scully from The X-Files, and perhaps most infamously, David and Maddie from Moonlighting, have all teased fans with one ecstatic moment built from years of delayed gratification. As television viewers have long known, the time inevitably comes when several seasons worth of romantic tension will finally have to be snapped.

A new teaser for ABC’s Castle hints that the show is ready to join that pantheon of television romances. After nearly three seasons of flirting, innuendo and suggestion, will Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Detective Beckett (Stana Katic) finally seal the deal?

The following clip could be the real deal or just an out of context smooch designed to tease. A quick analysis suggests the kiss could go either way. Does Det. Beckett have more on her mind than how “close” she can get to Castle? Is Castle confounded, or anxiously awaiting this overdue embrace? As the episode’s airdate on Jan. 24th rapidly approaches, we won’t have to wait long in order to find out.

Beyond murders, Castle has always been about the romantic attraction felt by its two leads. So, if Castle and Beckett stop playing and get serious, what will the repercussions be? Well, they certainly don’t have to be all gloom and doom, and Moonlighting curses.

While the show isn’t stale by any means, Castle having a better reason to see Beckett than a dead body might be a nice change to what is perhaps becoming a slew of very similar storylines. Furthermore, creating a deeper relationship between Beckett and the rest of Castle’s family—his daughter Alexis (Molly C. Quinn) and his thespian mother Martha (Susan Sulivan) may just generate some new and exciting situations. Those who fear a Castle/Beckett lip-lock might herald the proverbial jumping of the shark, and suck all the passion and flavor from the show need not worry. Katic’s past comments show she is clearly not taken in by all the superstition.

ABC doesn’t believe in curses either, apparently. Castle has already been picked up for the full 2011-2012 season.

‘Little Fockers’ Trailer #2 Offers Uninspired Comedy

Little Fockers Trailer Ben Stiller Robert De Niro

Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) and Gaylord “Greg” Focker (Ben Stiller) are at it yet again in next month’s Little Fockers, the third entry in the highly-successful Meet the Parents franchise.

A second trailer is out for Little Fockers and it features everything we’ve come to associate with this series: (predictable) puns involving Greg’s surname, gross-out physical comedy gags, and awkward sexual humor.

While neither Meet the Parents or Meet the Fockers were critical darlings, both were hits at the box office and grossed a combined total of nearly $850 million worldwide in theaters. These films are essentially feature-length sitcoms that revolve around the battle of wills between traditional, conservative-minded Jack and Greg, whose good intentions always seem to go wrong in the worst way imaginable. As contrived and uninspired as the comedy in these films often feels, these pics clearly hit the right note with the moviegoing masses.

Little Fockers doesn’t look to deviate from the successful formula of its predecessors at all -- even the narrator in this new preview (essentially) admits as much. But are moviegoers interested in paying to see pretty much the same movie for a third time?

Watch the new Little Fockers trailer below before answering that question:

Universal brought back Dustin Hoffman -- who was conspicuously absent from the Little Fockers teaser and international trailer -- to reprise his role as Bernie Focker in the threequel after an earlier cut of the film was poorly received by test audiences. We’re always happy to see the legendary actor onscreen, but it doesn’t look like even he can salvage this flick.

The cast for Little Fockers remains quite good, what with De Niro, Hoffman, Barbara Streisand, and Blythe Danner all still onboard. Harvey Keitel and Jessica Alba will have supporting roles in the film as well, though their characters look to be one-note jokes, at best.

Little Fockers Trailer #2

Little Fockers will be released in the U.S. on December 22nd, 2010. Will you be checking this one out in theaters?

Handheld gadget offers a window on Rome's past

Visitors to Rome will no longer have to rely on their imagination to see the ancient city at its glorious peak. Just point TimeMachine, a new handheld gadget produced by Ducati Myers and the University of Bologna, at famous sites like the Colosseum and it automatically displays a 3D reconstruction of the building.

The device is the first commercial application of the Rome Reborn project, an ongoing effort to reconstruct the city as it was in AD 320. The starting point of the project was an impressively detailed physical model of the city, some 15 meters across, built over a 40 years span in the twentieth century. That model was laser-scanned and digitised by an international team of researchers led by Bernard Frischer at the University of Virginia. The latest version, Rome Reborn 2.0, was unveiled at the SIGGRAPH conference in LA last week.

Fun though it is to fly over the ancient city and zoom in on specific buildings, it's when those flashy graphics meet present day Rome that Rome Reborn becomes most gripping.

That's where TimeMachine comes in. Point the device at a ruin and it displays the picture on a small screen. The gadget then uses image recognition to identify the delapidated buildin , and superimposes the virtual reconstruction of its heyday on top. You can then walk towards, or around the building to see the virtual reconstruction from any view. The viewer is given a moveable window on the past.

It's even relatively cheap to use - hiring the device costs around 5 Euros per hour, according to Joel Myers. So far TimeMachine is active at the Colosseum, and a version designed for the Forum should be available next month.
