Kobo Makes eBooks Social with New Facebook Connection

December 10 2010 by admin in News |

Remember when asking “what are you reading?” or “read any good books lately?” wasn’t a strange thing? The funny thing is, come to think of it, now that lots of us have eReaders it should be a lot easier to ask that. Heck we should be able to share the books we’ve been reading, buying, even sharing quotes as we go. So, why aren’t we?

I guess because all the eReader makers forgot the social aspect of reading. That is until now…

This morning Kobo updated their iPad app to add some pretty nifty new sharing features. I read about all the coolness on Macgasm this morning, but it wasn’t until this evening that I could actually play with it. It’s actually cooler than it appears at first blush. Maybe not because of the features that it has now but the features that it could have in the future. For the time being, the new features are just in the iPad version, Kobo is plans to roll out the features to the other platforms later. Before I get into the meaning of these changes, here are the highlighted new features from the Kobo press release:

Sharing Books and Passages:  Users can tell their friends what they are reading or highlight favorite passages in books they are reading.  This is a great way to get a book club started, or update your bookclub friends as you read.

Statistics:  Users can track their reading life with interesting statistics, including how many books they’ve read, pages turned, how fast they read, and times of day they read.  Statistics help users track their progress, earn awards, as well as discover and learn about their own reading styles and preferences.

Activity:  An activity panel shows the timeline of a user’s reading life, highlighting important events and milestones.   Users have an at-a-glance view of their reading life, including new books opened, read and finished, passages shared, awards earned and more.

Check-Ins:  Another ground-breaking feature called Check-Ins, enables readers to check-in with characters and locations inside books, enabling them to mark important milestones and win awards.   For example, readers reading Alice in Wonderland can check in with or meet Alice for the first time, or check-in to the Rabbit Hole and tell their friends on Facebook.

Awards and Rewards:  Readers can unlock fun and surprising awards that celebrate achievements in their reading life.  Awards like ‘The Papillion’ which is earned by the power social sharers, ‘The Twain’ earned by those that read daily, and ‘The Witching Hour’ for readers who read into the wee hours of the night – once an achievement has been earned the reader can than publish and share with friends on Facebook.   Award winners can also be rewarded with special offers from Kobo or its partners, just by reading!

Personal Book Cover:  As your personal Reading Life evolves Kobo creates and automatically updates your own personal book cover – a mosaic of your reading life that you can easily share with your friends on Facebook.

Awards! Just like in school when you got stickers for reading books! Hey don’t laugh I think the idea is great. The one feature that I haven’t played with much yet is the “check-ins” that connect with characters and places within your books. I saw one in Dracula … and okay I found Budapest … not much there in the information. For now. There is a lot of potential here for being able to pull in a lot of additional information about the books your are reading. Instead of going whole hog at first, I think Kobo has done the smart thing and started with incremental changes that might tantalize readers.

The characters and places connections are just one of the innovations Kobo is shooting for. Now that Kobo connects with Facebook, I don’t see why creating virtual book clubs wouldn’t be next. If you can connect what you’re reading, you can share quotes with each other, I’m sure Kobo might even be into creating badges and awards for larger groups. If you’ve built the software connections to get to Facebook and share things, what would be the difficulty in being able to work with groups? Maybe it’s just an API issue…and those can often just be resolved with time.

As for starting to use Reading Life on the iPad, the first time you launch Kobo on your iPad your settings and such will be updated and then there is a nice, slick introduction to the new features. Oh for people who like to jump ahead, you can swipe up and down with two fingers to get to the end or beginning of a chapter and left-right to skip between chapters.

I know that Google eBooks are garnering a lot of our attention, and Amazon certainly rules the eReader roost, but looking at Kindle, iBooks, and Kobo (sorry I can’t get a Nook up here) I think Kobo are the only folks who are truly innovating in eReaders. I think they see that the physical eReader is just one facet of the whole ebooks picture, the desktop, mobile apps, and (maybe) a web app…this is where you can do really cool and interesting things.

Kobo put together a short video on the features of this new version … take a gander. Then maybe give Kobo a shot. It is free and it can read all the book formats out there (yes, except Kindle and iBooks)…I think you’ll like it:

Anheuser-Busch taking local and multilingual approach to Facebook pages

Wednesday in a blog post, Facebook announced “New Targeted Publishing Capabilities,” stating:

“We’ve added location and language targeting for Page publishing using the Graph API. This enables developers to send more relevant posts to users and brings these APIs to parity with the targeting options accessible from the Pages publisher.”

One prominent brand, Anheuser-Busch InBev, is set to put the new capabilities to the test by establishing local and multilingual Facebook Pages.

According to a report, the company will test geographic and language targeting features on its Facebook pages starting this week.  Some of the pages managed by the company include: Budwesier, Bud Light, and regional brands such as Becks, Chelada, Stella Artois and Harp.

Brands can use the new features through Facebook page’s backend dashboard, allowing them to post targeted offers to those who “like” a brand in a certain country, state/region, or city.  Moreover, brands can target by language on their pages.

The company will use Syncapse‘s platform to test the new features according to the report. Based in Toronto, Syncapse can store data on geo-targeted posts, making it possible for marketers to compare engagements and test messaging tactics.

Anheuser-Busch InBev’s use of Facebook’s new capabilities is a deft move and should extend their brand presence.  According to the company’s most recent annual report, the company generated revenues of 36.8 billion USD, with strong growth worldwide.

North America saw sales-to-retailers increase 55 percent,  Latin America North enjoyed 70 percent market share growth,  with similar stellar growth in both the European and Asia/Pacific regions.

What are your thoughts on new local and multilingual targeting options on Facebook?  Do you think more brands will adopt similar strategies and will they prove effective?ClickZ

What if your Facebook became a real book?

Array

This is cool. Imagine being able to export your entire Facebook profile and turning it in to a hard back book! Well that is what 1000 users did thanks to a pretty cool app that was created for Bouygues Télécom. Here is what the agency who created the app had to say…

Bouygues Télécom asked us at DDB Paris to come up with an idea to launch their Facebook platform. They wanted us to create something that would go beyond using your profile picture in a funny way, or pranking your friends with a small joke. We decided to look at the way we use Facebook and found that even though we use the social networking site everyday, we forget our favorite moments we share online. So we created an app that could change that, and keep your facebook, in a book. Facebook ads engaged people to participate in the creation of their books and receive a printed copy of their statuses and photos. You could chose up to 10 friends to add into your book, as well as the desired timeframe, whether it be your birthday, wedding, or from the very beginning of your profile. After only two days we received 15.000 fans and the limited edition of 1.000 books were gone in only an hour.

What I love about this campaign is it shows great creativity and a way of marketing on Facebook that translates to the real world. There is no doubt that it’s a once off and they’ll get more mileage and coverage out of the video below than anything but love the creative idea. Smart.

Access denied: Facebook is banned…where, exactly?

Access DeniedMuch has been written about Facebook’s status as the world’s preeminent social network. And whilst there are some notable holes in its international armoury – such as Brazil and Russia where other social networks hold fort – Zucker & Co. doesn’t always have full control over where it can conquer.

The recent, albeit short lived, Facebook ban in Saudi Arabia served as a timely reminder that free speech simply doesn’t exist in some parts of the world. No information was revealed as to why the ban was implemented in the first place other than Facebook had ‘crossed a line‘ (according to an anonymous source), and similarly, no reason was given as to why access was opened again.

Whenever Facebook falls victim to a country’s censorious regime much is written about it, but not quite so much is written when such bans are lifted. And some countries introduce bans sporadically, hence it can be difficult to keep tabs on which countries permit access and which don’t.

A Short History of The Facebook Ban

Bangladesh banned Facebook in May 2010 following the publication of satirical images of the prophet Muhammad on the social networking site. The so called ‘social sanction’ lasted a mere week.

Not long before that, Pakistan had forbidden Facebook too, on the back of an ‘Everybody Draw Muhammad Day’ campaign launched by some members of the network. Two months later the ban was lifted.

Syria is an often cited example of an ‘enemy of the Internet’, and it’s easy to see why. Facebook has been officially banned in Syria since 2007, but obstacles such as the Government-erected firewall are easily circumvented in Internet cafes across the country. And according to Alexa ranking figures, Facebook receives the 8th highest number of visits in Syria – not bad for a website that’s supposedly banned. Good old proxy servers, eh?

Vietnam has supposedly been refusing users access to Facebook since late 2009. But given that Facebook is seeking inroads into Vietnam via a local Policy & Growth Manager, this is questionable. The only official confirmation of this ban has been a deafening silence from the government on the subject. Oh, and a leaked circular purportedly from the government that stipulated Facebook should be banned.

Throw into the equation that Facebook’s Alexa ranking in Vietnam is number 6 and it seems that any ban isn’t taken all that seriously, despite the apparent compliance of many ISPs.

Iran, contrary to popular opinion, doesn’t officially ban Facebook. Its history of banning the site has been rather turbulent, however. Facebook had very limited access in Iran from at least 2007, but the ban seemed to have been lifted some time after that. A ban was reintroduced prior to the 2009 elections, but was then lifted again a few days later following criticism. At the time, 150,000 Iranians were members of Facebook.

This isn’t to say Iran is the Internet’s best friend, however. In early 2010, a list of banned websites was published in several local newspapers, which stated that sites such as BBC and Badoo weren’t to be used. And anyone found guilty of using such websites could face a long stint behind bars.

China, it’s safe to say, does ban Facebook. Although a hundred thousand users are filtering through the cracks in the great firewall of China though. But that’s paltry, from a population of 1.3 billion people, in a country that Mark Zuckerberg would so dearly love to get involved with.

Very little reliable data exists with anything relating to North Korea, but it’s safe to say that Kim Jong-il doesn’t permit access to Facebook, or any website for that matter.

With world domination high on the Facebook agenda, don’t be surprised if Facebook continues to go from strength to strength in many countries. But similarly, don’t be surprised if you read about many more short-term and prolonged bans in the future either.BBC, The Register, Reuters, Economist, Mashable, The Telegraph

Facebook is trademarking “FACE”. How far is too far?

November 24 2010 by admin in News |

When it comes to branding your product, there are a couple schools of thought. One of them goes by the philosophy that you can never really have too much visibility. That, according to a trademark application for the word FACE, is apparently the method of operation for Facebook.

The application, which first went into production in 2005, has met some opposition. It would appear that no fewer than 10 different amendments have been made to the initial filing, and it’s still not yet completed. Of course, the reasoning behind this is likely because of Facebook assuming its own ubiquity with any word containing FACE in it.

The application raises a couple of valid questions. First off, what about the recent auction of the FaceMash site? Of course, then there’s also the potential for infringement via Apple’s FaceTime product. It’s worth noting, however, that we’re unable to find any report of the previous owner of the trademark (Faceparty.com) initiating legal action against Facebook or any other party.

The end result? Nobody is certain, just yet. It’s likely safe to say that Facebook will be a bit more readily available to defend its name or trademarks. However, it’s also worth noting that Apple is likely to not back down, itself.

As for you and me? I’m not certain that I can blame Facebook for taking things to this point, but it all depends on what happens because of it. As is true with most things in life, it all depends on the outcome.

The Facebook Shoe

November 23 2010 by admin in News |

Sometimes, a simple title is all you need, because you simply can’t make this stuff up.

Designed as a concept, the Adidas Facebook Superstars are a play off of the project that Adidas did in 2006 to celebrate its 35th anniversary. Emblazoned with the Facebook logo, the mission statement and of course sporting the customary Facebook blue color, they’d certainly be a shoe to send a message.

The problem, however, is that the message would automatically post to your wall with every step that you take.

Video look: Make your Facebook pages better with Appbistro’s app store

You might not realize that I have two separate ways to interact with you on Facebook. The first is my Facebook Profile Page, which everyone on Facebook has. That’s at http://facebook.com/robertscoble. The problem is that I’m limited to 5,000 friends there and I’ve only been adding people I know.

The other way is to use a Facebook Public Page. Mine is at http://facebook.com/scobleizer. With these you can have unlimited numbers of contacts. These are the pages that brands and celebrities use to interact with fans and large audiences.

The problem is, it’s very easy to add widgets and new streams to your Profile page, but for brands and others who want to have a public Facebook page, it’s very difficult. Even getting YouTube videos onto those pages are more difficult than Profiles. Plus, apps that were made for Profiles often can’t be used on Public Pages.

Until now I was at a disadvantage when compared to brands that had large teams of Web developers who could spend the time getting things to work. What changed? Appbistro shipped.

What is Appbistro? It’s an app store with tons of apps designed for Facebook’s Public Pages.

I recently visited the team in its San Francisco office and here’s the video where we discover it together. You’ll see some of the most useful apps that you should add onto your Facebook Page. I’m looking through them today and have already added a YouTube app to my page.
