Crack for technical recruiters: best StackOverflow users Twitter accounts handed over

People wonder why I follow so many people on Twitter. It’s for the small stuff that never would get into Techcrunch or Techmeme. Like this tweet by Brian Bondy yesterday. It would be easy to miss, except I know all my favorite programmer friends love StackOverflow (and its associated sites) the way I love Quora.

So when Brian made a series of Twitter lists of their best users I paid attention. Yes, I followed every single one of the people on these lists. They are crack for technical recruiters. Reads like a who’s who of programmers. After all, you don’t get reputation on Stack Overflow unless you can actually answer technical questions and have other people verify you are right most of the time.

In previous years it would take years to make a list of 500 programmers in the tech industry who have great reputations. Now? It took me less than 30 minutes to follow them all (you might not be able to, because Twitter limits most people to following fewer than 1,000 people in a day (actually that just caught me) and following fewer than 2,000 people total unless you also have 2,000 followers. But you can always follow Brian’s lists and just go through one-by-one.

What could you do with them? Look them up in Gist. See if they also are on LinkedIn, etc.

If I were a recruiter looking for programming talent, this would be the list I’d work on for the first month of 2011. It’s crack.

And, yes, I did send this list to the folks at Rackspace because we’re hiring.

First look: Lazyscope updated tonight (cool Twitter client that uses RSS)

When Ethan Gahng told me this week he had a new Twitter client I almost hung up on him.

After all, does the world really need yet another Twitter client? We already have hundreds of different ones and companies like Seesmic and TweetDeck, not to mention Twitter, have already done an awesome job. I didn’t see what else they might do to really get on my screen.

Let’s just say I was skeptical, but Ethan’s a nice guy and has been trying for a long time to find something that will get me excited.

During the video where he shows me Lazyscope (an Adobe Air-based client for viewing and creating the real-time web) for the first time you’ll hear me switch from being skeptical to seeing the possibilities. That was earlier this week.

Tonight he shipped an update with some of the feedback I gave him (he hadn’t seen an account that followed 27,000 Twitter users run on the service before he came to my house — I let him borrow my account to fix some bugs we both found).

It’s this iteration that has made me a fan, but I think he found something interesting: by mixing Twitter and RSS together you can make a better reading experience. Now each Tweet has a lot more content, if it includes a link to other content he even lets you subscribe to the RSS feed in a user-friendly way.

I’m now using Lazyscope. Is it perfect? No and it won’t be for everyone, but the prefetching of content it does is really cool and useful and saves me time and for that I’m grateful I didn’t blow him off. Why isn’t it perfect? Well, because he chose Adobe Air as the technology it won’t run on my iPhone or iPad, so I can’t use it everywhere. Also, I require a Twitter client to use the new Twitter retweet feature, along with Twitter favorite feature and Lazyscope does its own behavior (he explains that in the video, and tells me he’ll put options in a future version). Also, some people will find the UI too simplistic and want to go back to TweetDeck’s columnar approach or Twitter.com’s bigger fonts.

The update that shipped tonight makes the prefetching work much better, especially on fast-moving streams like mine. You should make sure you have the latest one.

Twitter narrowly beats out munchable chili oil in survey of products hot in Japan

In a new survey conducted by Japan ad agency Dentsu, smartphones and Twitter beat out ‘munchable chili oil’ for the ‘Hit Product Recognition Survey’ in Japan in 2010.

The iPad was no match for munchable chili oil, however, finishing 19th in the survey to munchable chili oil’s #3 spot, following smartphones at #1 and Twitter at #2.

Munchable chili oil (we just can’t stop saying that, it’s so hot!) wasn’t the only let’s say “only-in-Japan” result in the top ten, with LED light bulbs at #10, the Toyko Sky Tree (a still being built broadcasting tower) at #7 and Ryoma Sakamoto, a historical figure in a popular Samurai drama.

Some more understandable (outside of Japan) results were flat-screen TVs and the World Cup. Here’s the full list:

Tim Burton is co-writing a new story with his Twitter followers

Tim Burton is asking the Twitterverse to collaborate on a new story featuring his beloved character Stainboy.

His first tweet:

“Stainboy, using his obvious expertise, was called in to investigate mysterious glowing goo on the gallery floor #BurtonStory.”

Twittering Burton fans can post their own follow-up narrative, according to the last selected Tweet, by including the hash-tag #BurtonStory.

There are two rules to Burton’s version of the age-old game, exquisite corpse: Tweet as often as you like and keep it clean. The final short story will be published on December 6th.

Here’s how the story reads so far:

Burton’s entry: Stainboy, using his obvious expertise, was called in to investigate mysterious glowing goo on the gallery floor #BurtonStory

2 He felt his heart pounding hard against his ribs. As he bent down, he saw his own reflection on the surface of the puddle. #BurtonStory
3 Withholding his breath, he lightly poked the surface of the puddle. The surface shifted strangely, slowly spinning into action. #BurtonStory
4 Stainboy took a step back as the goo continued to spin faster and faster. A sharp cold wind whipped round the room. #BurtonStory
5 The chandelier swung, the art on the walls shook against the walls, and the goo began to take form. #BurtonStory
6 Slowly beginning to encircle Stainboy, the gelatinous mountain of goo looked almost familiar. #BurtonStory
7 Stainboy’s eyes narrowed as he tentatively lifted his hand towards the goo, allowing it to hover inches from the surface. #BurtonStory
8 Suddenly the goo sprang up, covering his hand. Stainboy tried to pull away but the harder he fought, the stronger it got. #BurtonStory
9 The goo pulled him closer and closer. He suddenly realized why the goo looked strangely familiar. #BurtonStory
10 But how did the goo end up on the gallery floor? And more importantly, why? #BurtonStory
11 It clung tightly to him, he could feel the chill of the gelatinous goo creep up his arm, true to his nature he did not panic. #BurtonStory
12 A plan was what he needed. Stainboy had always been the curious type, but right now, he had no desire to wait and see. #BurtonStory
13 As the goo continued to engulf his body, Stainboy noticed the chandelier, now swinging furiously. Could he reach it? #BurtonStory
14 Stainboy reached up as high as his arm would allow, the goo keeping him just inches out of reach of the chandelier #BurtonStory

I tried several times to add my two cents but Twitter wouldn’t connect, so I’ll just give you readers a taste of my poetic skill.

Suddenly the goo spoke! She whispered softly, stop Stainboy, give me a chance, it’s me, I just want to dance #BurtonStory

6 Twitter Tips for Small Business Beginners

If you’re a small business, particularly if you’re just starting out, Tweeting might not be very high on your priority list. Balancing the books, hiring new employees, and gaining new customers is fairly more consuming.

But engaging with social media is important to stay relevant because it’s where your customers are; they’re Facebooking, they’re Tweeting and they’re sharing photos on Flickr, Instagram and Path. (They’re definitely not MySpacing.)

In terms of ROI, Twitter is a vital tool for interacting with customers and spreading the word about your business. Operating on Twitter is quick, contagious and easy if you follow these 6 steps:

1. Setting up your Twitter profile is about personal branding. Choose a great photo; one that will be highly memorable in its tiny Twitter-form. Monochrome, simple images that you use for other social networks work best. If your full company name is available, grab it. Avoid the ‘_’ character because it’s easy for people to forget, especially while working at Twitter-speed. If your company name is gone, be creative. Try reversing the order like BowlBrooklyn or adding a nickname like SammyAdams or a number like Magnolia212. Just remember on Twitter, your username is your identity. For location, you have 30 characters to spell it out. Don’t be too cute like “The Internet,” because in most cases, you want people to find you. If you are an actual retail shop or local restaurant, be as exact as you can. Enter your website, preferably your company’s website or blog. Lastly, your 160-character Twitter bio is incredibly important because it’s what people read when they ask themselves, “Why do I want to follow this person?” @KissMyBundt in Los Angeles may have a slightly eyebrow raising name, but they make up for it with their bio, which is short, sweet and informative: “A Los Angeles-based bakery specializing in DELICIOUS Made-from-scratch bundt cakes. (323)655.0559.” (Yes, that is bacon on the Bundt cake.)

2. Follow People. This is the first type of relationship on Twitter. It’s important to follow relevant people, industry influencers and global thinkers who will help you keep abreast of the news and learn more about the Twitter community you are about to enter. Trada, a company we’ve written about before, is helping to shape the online advertising community by allowing an advertiser to advertise on all three major search engines with 1 click. On Twitter, Trada follows over 2,000 people including a wide range of marketing consultants, Internet marketers, entrepreneurs, CEOs, and interactive Jedis. So Trada follows a great list of people, relevant to their company’s pursuits and engages with these people by re-tweeting and mentioning their tweets. And it looks like it works as Trada has also garnered over 2,000 followers.

3. Get Followers. This is the second type of relationship on Twitter. People will follow you for a variety of reasons. Some will follow you because they believe you are an interesting source of information. Namu Restaurant in San Francisco recently tweeted, “Well written short read about our modern food system. http://fb.me/BeLRlE89,” which works because the tweet is both informative and shows their followers that the “mod-cali” restaurant really cares about our modern food system.

Others will follow you because they like you, even though they might not really know you. Unlike Facebook pages which feel like you are interacting with a brand, Twitter allows you to show off your personality in a more intimate way. Tweet honestly. For example, NYC’s seafood restaurant Luke’s Lobster tweeted today, “Happy Monday, we’ve got a short workweek ahead! Excited for some turkey and football (and yes, some lobster, too)!!” This is great because it relates to their customers, who get excited about turkey, football and short workweeks too.

4. Get Retweeted (Essentially to gain more followers). Curate your tweets. Tweet great content, always. Tweet quotes. Tweet delicious, yummy restaurant specials. Tweet events that pertain to your business. Be interesting. Be creative and pithy. Do not tweet when you’ve got a bad hangover (unless you own an awesome bar and threw a huge party). Give stuff away! @Metropolisbooks, a book store in downtown Los Angeles tweeted this morning, “Don’t forget we also have Gift Certificates in any amount starting at $10.00 http://fb.me/HNVyqK9H” People love free stuff and they will re-tweet your offers and then people who want $10 gift certificates to their local book store will start following. Lastly, be funny! (LOL funny is fine, ROTFL is excellent.) According to Cassie Rice, the COO of Socialblaze, a social media analytics system, the tweets that receive the most engagement involve humor or photos.

5. Make Great Connections. This is the third type of relationship on Twitter; when you are following someone who follows you back, it is a mutual follow if you will. Support your connections. San Francisco’s Namu Restaurant does a great job at this by re-tweeting photos posted by people in their industry, like Chef Dennis H Lee. ”RT @DennisHLee http://plixi.com/p/56230664 and we thought we chopped a lot of green onions @namusf!” Always try to engage in conversation with your connections on Twitter. This week I started following @bluebottlenyc, which brews– hands down– the best coffee in NYC (thanks for the hot tip @JMoran). They recently tweeted, “@ProjectLatte Yes, every Tuesday! Please come join us when you’re free!” Which is great because it builds a relationship with Project Latte, which is as good as an old school meeting over martinis and it shows me that Blue Bottle engages with their community, plus as an added bonus, I now know about Project Latte, a New York City cafe culture guide. Bonus points.

6. Create Customer Evangelists: Free labor! Twitter followers are essentially Facebook fans. And turning them into brand evangelists isn’t that hard to do. First and foremost, you have to deliver a great product. Virgin America, while not a small business, has done this better than any other brand in the world. The company sees approximately 300 to 500 in-flight tweets per day (over half of their flyers carry a laptop on board). Virgin America has over 130,000 followers on Twitter. “Twitter makes us money,” says Virgin America’s VP of Marketing Porter Gale, “We’ve seen our followers recommend our services and close a sale.”

Once you’ve got the hang of Twitter, you may soon become addicted like the entire staff of The Next Web. We are, essentially, Twitter evangelists. And Twitter pays off, literally. In fact, about 6 months ago I started following @Zee (who lives 3,400 miles or 5,500 kilometers from me). After seeing his Tweet about a job opening, I sent him a quick @ and e-mail follow-up and now I can thank Twitter (at least in part) for my current role as your East Coast Editor of @TheNextWeb.
