Aaron Johnson, Nicholas Hoult & More Testing for ‘Jack the Giant Killer’

Jack the Giant Killer Bryan Singer testing actors - Aaron Johnson, Nicholas Hoult

The last we reported on Bryan Singer’s next film, Jack the Giant Killer, the studio had given the project the official green light and the search was on for someone to star in the titular role of Jack.

After being rumored for the role of Cyclops in the Singer-produced X-Men: First Class, rising star Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) has been mentioned as the frontrunner for the lead role in Giant Killer. But now we’re hearing word that although Johnson might have caught the eye of Singer, the actor isn’t the only one in the running for the part.

Heat Vision is reporting that Johnson will test alongside Nicholas Hoult (Clash of the Titans) and the relatively unknown Aneurin Barnard (Ironclad) for the lead. Jamie Campbell Bower (Twilight, Harry Potter) was previously up for the role as well, but he has reportedly broken his ankle and can’t test (bummer).

What’s interesting is that aside from Johnson being previously linked to X-Men: First Class, Hoult is actually starring in the X-Men prequel as the character of Beast in his younger years. Singer was effectively using the casting process for First Class to find candidates for Giant Killer. A smart move, I’d say, considering First Class contains a lot of stars who are becoming more and more popular by the day (others include James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Rose Byrne).

If you’re wondering about the conspicuous absence of female casting, then fear not as the key female role of a princess who gets kidnapped by giants and needs rescuing is just as sought after as the lead male role. Heat Vision reports that Adelaide Kane, Lily Collins and Juno Temple are all going to test for the princess role. Kane appeared in the Australian soap opera Neighbours; Collins starred in The Blind Side and can be seen in the upcoming Priest; and Temple is a rising star who has been making a name for herself in such films as Atonement and Greenberg.

Interestingly, the actors are being asked to sign eight-or-nine month holds, which is being described as an “extraordinary amount of time for a production.” Is this just as a precaution on Singer and the studio’s part because of the amount of technical work that’s supposedly involved with Giant Killer? Shooting on the film was supposed to have started this past summer, but the daunting special effects work and the studio tightening the budget meant that it was delayed until early next year.

Every so often a project comes along that becomes THE project for the hot young stars of Hollywood to compete for. Other notable examples include David Fincher’s remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Alfonso CuarĂ³n’s Gravity and Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels.

Jack the Giant Killer represents yet another modern Hollywood film that takes a classic fairytale and puts a twist on it (see Red Riding Hood as another upcoming example). With the winning combination of Singer and Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) directing and writing, respectively, I’m very much anticipating Jack the Giant Killer.

As far as the lead role goes, I’d like to see Johnson get it. He was awesome in Kick-Ass and I really want to see him to go on to do interesting projects that also get him a lot of exposure as an actor. And for the lead female role, my vote goes to Temple as I think she’s one of the more interesting young actresses to emerge from the indie scene.

No official schedules have been set for Jack the Giant Killer as of yet, but both Singer and the studio are eyeing tests to start in London in a couple of weeks. Shooting is expected to begin next March, with a release date TBA.

Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus vs. Giant Dorito?

Crash the Super Bowl ad submission Mega Shark vs. Giant Dorito

Last year the Internet literally blew up when the first (and only) trailer for The Asylum’s monster flick Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus hit the web.

OK, so the internet didn’t blow up in a literal sense but traffic and interest sure did spike when people got their first glimpse of what is quite possibly the coolest scene ever to grace the small screen – a giant prehistoric shark leaping from the ocean to chomp a 747 jetliner passing overhead!

The film managed to draw the eyes of sci-fi fans around the world, even though it starred former eighties singing sensation-turned-Playboy centerfold-turned-actress, Debroah (Debbi) Gibson, and former nineties hunk Lorenzo “Snake Eater” Lamas. There was never really a doubt that The Asylum was planning a sequel to Mega Shark vs. Octopus, even Gibson was optimistic when she stated during an interview with MTV:

I haven’t seen the final edit, but we did do a version that leaves the door open for a potential sequel. Because God knows what else is in the ocean. I thought maybe a seahorse? Maybe a 500-foot lobster would be good. But yes, there is the potential for a sequel, and I would absolutely love it.

By “love it” she apparently meant “I won’t be starring in it” because neither Lamas or Gibson will star in the next installment, titled Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus. Instead, another former 80s/90s  star, Jaleel “Urkel” White (Family Matters) will watch these two prehistoric behemoths battle it out to the death. Joining him will be everyone’s favorite IAO  “Yes Man,” Robert Picardo (Stargate: Atlantis).

Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus is sure to be popular with fans of cheesy sci-fi films, but come January the rest of the world may get a chance to become acquainted with the beloved sharp-tooth predator. Some of the creators of Mega Shark have put together an ad and have submitted it to this year’s Doritos’ Crash the Super Bowl Ad contest.

The results are quite hilarious and I for one can’t wait to see this ad win an advertising slot at the Super Bowl. Watch the video below:

You can watch a high quality version HERE.

The acting, directing and SFX are on par for a typical film made by The Asylum (read: often laughably bad) but for an advertisement such as this it really works. People like cheesy humor in their Super Bowl ads – which explains why the Bud Light commercials are always popular – and Mega Shark vs. Giant Dorito has “cheesy” humor in spades (sorry, had to do it).

Because you know there will eventually be a third film, who would you like to see Mega Shark battle next? I vote for Mega Shark vs. Sharktopus.

Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus brings the battle to DVD this Christmas, December 21, 2010.

Facebook Inks A Deal With Russian Search Giant Yandex

Prior to this, Yandex has already been integrating quite an amount of social content into its search by indexing pages of popular micro-blogging services and Russian-language blog-hosting sites such as Twitter.com and LiveInternet.ru, which have agreed to input their data automatically to the search engine’s index . So more or less, Yandex web search nowadays highlights user profiles of such websites. And now that Facebook is also in its kitty, it is well on its way to provide the freshest ever social content to its users.

Facebook Inks A Deal With Russian Search Giant Yandex

In a move that could dramatically increase the user base of Facebook in Russia, the social networking giant has signed a deal with the country’s largest search engine Yandex for status updates. Both the companies announced that they are keen to improve their social services by way of providing complimentary engines.

The partnership agreement has two parts in all. The first part is about Facebook supplying a data feed of status updates from its profiles, pages or groups to Yandex. And the second one is that the homepage of Yandex’s website will host a Facebook widget and its own instant messaging service Ya.Online that will let its users know of any new notifications on Facebook. This implies that the experience would be more attractive for those users who have an account in Facebook.

Javier Olivan, Head of International at Facebook too was very optimistic about the partnership and said, “We feel that this partnership will bring a lot of value for our Russian users as we would like the public information on Facebook to be easily searchable via Yandex.”

The deal however, only involves Yandex.ru, the company’s search engine in Russia, and not the International version Yandex.com.  How far can the partnership go and make both the parties reap the fruits? It is wait and watch for now.
