Alibaba now tops Google in online advertising share in China

December 10 2010 by admin in News |

Google’s decline in the Chinese search market has been widely documented this year after it withdrew from the country over allegations of hacking and its refusal to censor search results.

The final irony being Google’s own Zeitgeist 2010 figures released yesterday that show the top search term in China in 2010 was Baidu.

Now, new figures have been released for the third quarter of 2010 that show Google has given up the second place slot in online advertising in China to e-commerce giant Alibaba.

The figures, released by Beijing based research firm Analysys International show that Baidu still has the largest share of the online advertising market, but, that Alibaba has now passed Google to take second place.  Alibaba is the owner of taobao.com, China’s largest online marketplace.  It is TaoBao that probably accounts for Alibaba’s strength in the online advertising market.

Also interesting is Sina, and even Tencent who are very close to pushing Google even further down the table into fourth or fifth place when the figures for the fourth quarter are released.

‘Jackass 3.5′ Premieres Online This March

Jackass 3.5 online

When Jackass 3D premiered in October, many critics and audience members remarked that while Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam, and the rest of the crew still delivered the goods – it was clear they were running out of steam. Regardless, the film has already made upwards of $155 million so, naturally, Paramount still sees Jackass as a viable property.

But what do you do when your cast might be reluctant about a fourth go-around? Utilize unused footage and turn it into a new film titled Jackass 3.5.

Actually, it sounds like this was the plan all along and that Jackass 3.5 was shot simultaneously with Jackass 3D and is not just a collection of deleted scenes. According to THR, new stunts will debut online weekly beginning this March. Afterwards, they’ll be combined into a full-length feature film.

Paramount utilized a similar strategy with Jackass 2.5, which was available online before being released on DVD (it remains the studio’s most successful non-theatrical release). Jackass ringleader Johnny Knoxville promises Jackass 3.5 is a worthy installment and that not all of the best bits were used in Jackass 3D:

“For Jackass3D we shot enough footage for two movies so a lot of great stuff didn’t make it in the film. Luckily you will get to see those bits in 3.5. We also shot some additional footage in Europe specifically for 3.5. I have staples in my head right now to prove it. Woo hoo.”

Thomas Lesinski, president of Paramount Digital Entertainment, explains why this group and their antics are such a natural fit for internet distribution:

“I don’t want to say that the Jackass guys invented the Internet, but they were doing viral videos before most people had even heard the term. That distinguished heritage makes Jackass the perfect franchise for digital … When the Jackass guys went to make Jackass 3D, we proposed that we shoot a follow up to the successful Jackass 2.5 digital feature alongside it, and everyone was up for it. In Jackass 3.5, you are going to see an entire movie’s worth of new stunts, new pranks and new gags, on whatever screen you choose.”

Jackass 3.5 March 2011

And then there’s my favorite quote from MTVN Music/Logo/Film Group president Van Toffler who says:

“It’s been ten years since Jackass first launched on MTV and there is still more poo, stunts and hilarity to go around on every screen imaginable … Whenever the Jackass crew gets together, you know there will be a plethora of valuable fragments of entertainment to satiate their fans, and Jackass 3.5 will not disappoint as the latest installment in this fine franchise.”

Is that the first time the words ‘poo’, ‘satiate’, and ‘fine franchise’ have all been used in the same description? Regardless, this sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I don’t care if I’m a grown man – I love the Jackass movies. I still laugh every time I see Bam get taken out by that giant hand.

I definitely got the sense that they weren’t really as into Jackass 3D as they were past installments, but I still enjoyed it. Whether it was intentional or not, I also thought the retrospective during the end credits was a pretty fitting conclusion to the entire series.

Alas, there’s more daredevil stunts and nausea-inducing moments on the way with Jackass 3.5.

The perfect Thanksgiving meal online?

OK, I know I have readers all around the world, but this one is for those who live in the United States.

On Thursday we’re having our Thanksgiving. It’s my favorite holiday because, well, it gives me a chance to cook!

Today Maryam and I are looking around for what we should make.

Last night, while at the best restaurant in Half Moon Bay, Cetrella, I asked the head chef what he’d make. Sounds yummy.

But that got me thinking. What are the best places online to find Thanksgiving recipes? So far I like Epicurious, FoodNetwork, and All Recipes the best.

How about you? Care to share your best recipes? Got any outstanding ones that are easy enough for a geek to make?

BootStrapToday.com – An Online IT Lifecycle Management Tool

BootStrapToday.com is an online IT Lifecycle Management tool. It is a live system that allows students to actively contribute to ongoing projects in companies. This service is based on three simple words: Share, Collaborate and Succeed.

wiki

SERVICE ANALYSIS

Need Gap Addressed: An opportunity for students to work on live projects under mentorship of industry experts. Companies would have to spend lesser time and money on employees joining their company fresh out of college.

So, how does this service work: A simple registration form helps students and companies to set up accounts. Companies use these accounts to create projects and publish them online, or seek help with research and development work or with prototype projects. Students apply for these projects and work in teams under a mentor. They can also use their accounts to host their own projects online.

Target Market Segment: The targeted audience includes – Entrepreneurs and small businesses; artists, designers and architects; Companies managing outsourced work and students.

Features Offered: A unique feature is the ability to store Wiki and Tickets in SVN as well. Hence users can backup entire projects data by backing up the SVN repository. Some other features include:

WikiUser and Project DashboardCalendarSSLMultiple projects in an account. No restriction on number of Projects. Each project gets its own SVN repository, Tickets, Milestones and Wiki

Pricing: The website offers 5 paid plans in addition to a very basic free plan. The price range for paid plans range from $9 to $99 monthly. The plans differ on the basis of number of users, projects allowed and the storage space offered. The site also offers 30 days free trial on all paid plans.

OUR THOUGHTS

It’s a well thought out and well executed service offering. The identified need gap is a genuine one. Considering the huge gap in the education provided to students in engineering colleges and the real world scenarios/projects faced by companies in which the students later work, this service can go a long way in providing the necessary exposure to students and in turn cut down the training costs for companies.

Mumbai Taximen’s Union Steps Up After Meter Jam – Starts Online Forum

Mid-day recently took the initiative by providing a number where commuters could call in and report the license plate number and the driver’s license number of an errant cabbie. Through this many cab drivers lost their licenses but the problem failed to cease. Now the Mumbai Taximen’s Union has finally taken notice and has decided to start an online forum where commuters can report arrogant and errant cabbies.

Why now? Mumbai Taximen’s Union speaks up

According to the Union, movements like Meter Jam have affected the “relationship” between cab drivers and commuters. According to them, the new website which will be launched in January next year, will help better communication between the two parties.

Will this work?

I may be extremely skeptical here but I highly doubt this is going to work. Cab drivers have, and always will, refuse commuters. At airports, commuters are not charged by the meter but rather an arbitrary amount that the cab driver feels right at the moment. Some have excuses like “I am getting late for lunch”, to “I am running out of gas”, or the more blatant “I can’t go there”. Will the forum really help change any of this?

Forums are a great way to put in complaints. Delhi police even resorted to Facebook to reach out to the community. Online forums and groups are a great way for the law and unions like the Mumbai Taximen’s Union to hear the grievances of the people. However, how much it will help the community is very much up for debate.

Do you think such forums are a boon or just a gimmick to let off some pressure?

Online Couponing – The Rising Star For E-Commerce?

According to report released by Jasper Infotech – The company behind Snapdeal over 60% of the buyers buying the deals from their site are just about 25 years old. This means the young executive is using his credit card to avail of deals and save money. As most deals on such sites are lifestyle related be it a spa or a restaurant voucher there is no risk of actually getting a bad product or delay in delivery. The report currently pegs the Industry size to a meagre 25 crore but predicts huge potential for the business. 80% of the business currently comes from Metros and Tier I cities and given the nature of deals it is bound to penetrate to tier 2 cities as the players expand their deals to these cities.

Topmost bought services include Food & Dining, Health & Beauty services & Weekend getaways.

Opportunity Is In Mobile?

For such a model to scale one needs to figure out a way to reach a larger audience and the non-credit/debit card using audience as well. One of the ways could be sms wherein a user subscribes to an sms push and when he does get a message all he needs to do to buy the deal is reply yes in return and an auto debit is done on his mobile bill. Yes such a model would come in purview of RBI payments regulations and for sure the mobile operators would take a hefty cut from business but all these issues aside the mobile is one that is bound to work and scale this business to the next level.
